History

Crompton Greaves was founded in 1878 by R.E.B. Crompton. It joined its hands with F.A. Parkinson to form Crompton Parkinson Ltd., (CPL) in the year 1927. CPL established its Indian subsidiary viz. Crompton Parkinson Works Ltd., in Bombay in the year 1937, in collaboration with Greaves Cotton and Co (GCC). The company was taken over by Lala Karamchand Thapar in the year 1947.

It was established in 2016 as an outcome of the demerger of Crompton Greaves Limited, and the demerger plan was announced in July 2014 and was completed in 2016.

The first unit of electricity was generated in 1899, on a Crompton Dynamo at Calcutta. It marks its importance in being the largest private sector enterprise in India today, which designs, manufactures, and markets high-technology electrical products and services which are aligned with power generation, transmission, and distribution.

It also shows its importance in being customer-centric which emerges as a first choice global supplier for high-quality electrical equipment. Crompton is the single largest source for a wide variety of electrical equipment and products.

Founder - R. E. B Crompton

R. E. B. Crompton is the founder of Crompton & Co., who pioneered electric lighting and public electricity supply systems. He decided to pursue Engineering and became an electrical engineer, and also an industrialist, and an inventor.

He came up with his own design and gave brighter and steadier light than existing types. Mr. Crompton was consulted by Joseph Swan when he was developing his incandescent light bulb, which made him reputed. He manufactured and designed switchgear, circuit breakers, motors, electric meters, dynamos, as well as lamps.
